Among the more interesting facets of the recently introduced ISO 9001:2015 revision is the movement from a quality-based to a business process-based management system. This transition involves the deployment of a new concept in the ISO registration process: the understanding and appreciation of the Context of the Organization.

Community of Culture

In simplified terms, an encompassing definition of Context of the Organization might be thought of as a community of those possessing a personal stake in the success of your firm. Owners, investors, creditors, risk managers, employees, company officers, suppliers, clients and many, many others have a critical interest in the growth of your organization. Each of these groups are dependent upon, not just your profitability, but also upon your financial stability, quality brand in the marketplace and strategic vision for the future. More than ever, no company is an island unto itself; rather, they are an interdependent organization that shrinks or grows within its’ woven community of influence.

And yet, Context of the Organization extends beyond human interactions. It is comprised of available facilities in your geographic area, business-friendly tax codes and federal environmental restrictions. It involves manpower reserves, an educated employment pool and infrastructure realities of your corporate sites. As you begin to understand the encompassing nature of those who hold an interest in the health and success of your firm, each component of the management system takes on added importance. Your firm, its’ clients and suppliers, its’ investors and staff are all involved in the ongoing mission of constructing a true community of promise.

As the leadership team of each firm understands its’ dependency on all the community members, the strategic mission and goals are redefined as larger and more encompassing. Production associates become primary quality inspectors. Managers become aware of undue business risks. Suppliers are incentivized to recommend superior, cost-effective components. Clients encourage firms to offer more expansive and upgraded services. Investors see positive strategic moves and look to expand their stake in the operations.

Context of the Organization is not simply the corporate environment of a firm; rather, it is the listing of each partner of influence, which commits to building a community of corporate promise.
